We can&#8217;t tell you your reason from here. What we can give you is a seven-day test that shows it to you in your own numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common reasons people overspend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is good writing on this already. In Psychology Today, Shahram Heshmat, Ph.D., lists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/science-choice\/201801\/10-reasons-why-people-spend-too-much\">10 reasons why people spend too much<\/a>. A few that most of us will recognize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Present bias.<\/strong> A reward today feels bigger than a goal that is months away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paying by card.<\/strong> A card separates the pleasure of buying from the pain of paying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Special occasions.<\/strong> Birthdays and holidays feel like exceptions, even though they come around often.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Retail therapy.<\/strong> Shopping to lift a low mood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The &#8220;what the hell&#8221; effect.<\/strong> After one slip, it is easy to keep going.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of these are real. Reading the list is a good start, and the next step is finding out which of them shows up in your own week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The hard part: you can&#8217;t see it while it&#8217;s happening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A purchase takes seconds, and each one feels reasonable. Six dollars here, fourteen there. No single purchase looks like the problem. The total does, and you only meet the total weeks later on a statement, when the details are hard to remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau puts it simply in its article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/about-us\/blog\/managing-your-spending-achieve-your-goals\/\">managing your spending<\/a>: &#8220;Getting feedback on spending can help you keep your spending in check.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closer that feedback is to the purchase, the more useful it is. That is the idea behind the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 7-day overspending test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rules are short. For seven days, record every purchase at the moment you make it. Don&#8217;t try to spend less. The goal this week is an honest picture, so spend the way you normally do. Make sure the seven days include a weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Days 1\u20137: log every purchase as it happens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any method works: a notes app, a spreadsheet, a page in a notebook. Some show two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Small, frequent buys.<\/strong> One category has a long list of entries, each of them small. Coffee, snacks, rides, in-app purchases. None of them felt like spending at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. One big category.<\/strong> A single slice of the chart is much larger than the rest. The money isn&#8217;t leaking everywhere. It is going to one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Weekend spikes.<\/strong> Scan the dates on your list. If most of the week&#8217;s total sits on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, your weekdays are fine and your weekends are doing the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to change once you know your pattern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pick one rule, the one that matches your pattern. One change you keep is worth more than five you drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Small, frequent buys:<\/strong> set a limit for that one category and keep logging it, even if you stop logging everything else.
